Dr Robert Ryan from Dundee began his higher education studies for his chosen career with a Diploma in Biosciences at the Dublin Institute of Technology, where he studied from 1995 until 1999 to graduate with Distinction. During this time, he also achieved a Certificate in Quality Assurance and Marketing and a Certificate in Applied Photography, also with Distinction, at the same institution. This was followed by a B.Sc. in Microbiology and Biochemistry at the Carlow Institute of Technology, achieving First Class Honours before embarking on a PhD in Microbial Genetics, which was completed in 2004. An MSc. in Bioinformatics and Biotechnology from the Dublin Institute of Technology was also completed in 2001.
Dr Robert Ryan took on a postdoctoral research assistant position at University College Cork in 2004, working in the laboratory of Professor Maxwell Dow for four years. At the University of Oxford, Ryan worked with Professor Judith Armitage as a HFSP Research Fellow from 2008 through 2009. This was followed by a trip across the Atlantic to accept a position at Dartmouth Medical School, working in the laboratory of Professor George O’Toole as a HRB / Marie Curie Mobility Fellow. In 2010, Dr Robert Ryan returned to his home country of Ireland and University College Cork, this time working as a Science Foundation Ireland Starting Investigator within the Microbiology Department. Another move in 2013 took Ryan to the College of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee, where he held the position of Wellcome Trust Researcher / Manager within the Division of Molecular Microbiology for four years. Today, Dr Robert Ryan works as an advisor and medical writer.
Publications and Public Speaking
To date, Dr Robert Ryan from Dundee has published more than 10 book chapters, 40 primary peer reviewed journal articles and 20 invited review articles. He has also given more than 100 seminars both nationally and internationally.
Hobbies and Interests
Dr Robert Ryan is an avid astronomer in his spare time. He also enjoys photography and film as well as reading. As a highly active person with a love of the great outdoors, Ryan spends time hiking and hill-walking in various locations. He has also been a Scout leader on and off for more than two decades.
